How to get help

Call the hotline for information or dispute assistance. For a written Public Information Act complaint, include a copy of the original information request and relevant correspondence or other supporting documentation. Overcharge complaints must meet the stated ten-business-day deadline.

Who this service helps

Members of the public and governmental entities with questions about Texas open-government laws. Written Public Information Act complaints require the facts and supporting records described by the official guidance. Open Meetings Act criminal complaints go to the county or criminal district attorney rather than the Attorney General.

The Open Government Hotline answers questions and helps resolve disputes involving the Texas Public Information Act and Open Meetings Act. The Open Records Division also accepts written complaints in specified Public Information Act situations, including failures to respond, failures to comply with a ruling, and alleged copy or inspection overcharges.
