How to get help
First contact one of the referral organizations listed on the official page; the Grants and Housing Department does not accept an application without a referral. Department staff review a complete preliminary application for waiting-list placement, then request a full application and supporting information when the household is selected. Who this service helps
Applicants must have a direct referral from an approved local nonprofit social-service agency, qualify as a family under HUD rules, be a U.S. citizen or legal resident, live in the City of Galveston, and have income at or below HUD-specified limits. The department makes the final eligibility determination.

Cost / fees
Assistance is provided for one year with no reapplication. The participant pays the greater of $50 or 30% of adjusted monthly household income toward rent. A security deposit may not exceed twice the monthly rent.
About this service
The federally funded HOME Tenant-Based Rental Assistance program assists eligible low-income households with rent and may also help with security deposits. Assistance follows the approved applicant rather than a specific unit, and an approved household must lease an acceptable unit within Galveston city limits.
