Evaluate standing and whether any prior order exists, select the agreed or default instructions, file the petition and nonparent standing affidavit in the proper court, obtain the parents' required signatures or arrange formal service, complete support and child-information forms, and present the proposed order through the court's required process.
Who this service helps
For a grandparent or other nonparent who has legal standing to file, when no existing order governs the child other than a qualifying family-violence protective order. Agreed instructions require both parents to sign the necessary forms; default instructions apply only when the applicable respondents are properly served and do not answer or appear.
